10th July 2017 - Year 6 Leavers' Tour of Hovingham Hall

"On Monday 10th July I, as a Year 6 leaver, had the wonderful opportunity of visiting Hovingham Hall with Lady Worsley as my guide. I was even able to see parts of the Hall to which the public do not have access! One of the best parts of the tour was being introduced to the Duchess of Kent – who was visiting at the time. The Duchess taught me a piece on the piano and she was impressed with how quickly I mastered it. I really enjoyed playing the piano with her. She encouraged me to continue with this new interest. What an amazing morning!"   Beatrice Flatt

10th July 2017 - Y3-6 Rounders Event

Mr Smith is organising a KS2 Rounders event for Slingsby, Hovingham C of E and St. Hilda’s School. This has been re-scheduled for July 10th at 1.15pm on Slingsby Sports Field. All parents are welcome to attend and offer their support to all three schools. It would probably be a good idea to bring plenty of water to drink and sunhats (school does have a plentiful supply of hats but please feel free to bring your own).

6th July 2017 - Federation Sports Day

Pupils from both schools spent the day at St Hilda’s enjoying a range of sporting activities. It was lovely to see so many parents who were able to attend in the afternoon to offer their support. We are all extremely proud of the efforts and sportsmanship of all the pupils!

1st July 2017 - Hovingham Market Café

Friends of Hovingham School (FOHS) raised a fantastic £540 at the Hovingham Market Café last Saturday - a brilliant effort! Thank you to everyone who made cakes or helped on the day.

21st June 2017 - Parent Hub

We are delighted to say that both Hovingham and St Hilda’s have signed up to use “Parent Hub” to improve communication between school and home.

Parent Hub is a FREE messaging app for parents to use and will enable you to keep up to date with what’s going on in school. We will be able to send you messages, documents, newsletters and even pictures of your child’s work. By using the app all messages will be safely stored in one place and be easy to find!

If you are unable to use a smartphone app we can still send you text messages to keep you up to date but this will cost the school a small amount per text, where as messages sent via the app are free of charge.

Please look at the information below and if possible download the app as soon as possible. We plan to start trialling the system this term with the aim of using it fully from September.

Next Friday 30th June we will randomly draw a name from all those who have downloaded the app to win a prize!

5th June 2017 - Visit from the Bishop of Selby

We were delighted to have Bishop Thompson visit us on Monday.  He led the school in worship then spent time answering questions from the children in both classes.  The questions posed by the children were responded to warmly by the Bishop and shed light on many aspects of his work.  Following a meeting with Mr Wilson and Mr Pynn the Bishop then led a blessing under the new seated canopy area in the playground.  More details about his visit will follow next week when Howard Class unveil the winners of the "Journalist for a Day" initiative!

28th April 2017 - Sports Leader Training

Mrs Carter would like to say that it was a real pleasure taking the Y5/6 children for a session of initial 'sports leader' training on Friday afternoon. The children were full of enthusiasm and great ideas. This training was carried out with the intention that they take responsibility of, and lead, a skills development programme on a lunch time. They will support the younger children in developing their skills but also have the opportunity to access the programme at their own level and support each other. During the session on Friday afternoon the Y5/6 children used their coaching techniques to support the Y1 children in developing their skills in running, balancing, throwing, catching and kicking. Mrs Carter was particularly impressed with the kind words of encouragement that she heard as she observed the children. All of the children said that they had really enjoyed the experience and that they are looking forward to the programme being introduced. Please click here to view some of the work in action.

 2nd March 2017 - World Book Day

World Book Day is an international event, celebrated by over 100 countries. The pupils and staff all enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters - everyone looked absolutely fantastic!

The pupils in Worsley Class all had fun modelling their outfits on the catwalk! They also designed a poster to advertise their favourite books, then finished off the morning by collecting data from books about the length of words in sentences and used this data to make bar charts. Please click here to view the photographs

We are running a Book Tournament to find the school's favourite books. We would like all pupils to think about their most-loved book and to write a book review to persuade us all to give it a go! After half term, Class 2 will collate the data to bring the selection down to the top 4 books as chosen by Howard Class and the top 4 books as chosen by Worsley Class. Following this, the children will be given time to read all four books and voting will commence to bring it down to a final 2. We hope to announce the winning book before Easter! This year we would like the pupils to come to school dressed as their favourite book character.

Following on from the success of our Skip2bfit day last year, on Monday 6th February we had a Box2bfit day in school. Children took part in boxing fitness training. The exercises were incorporated into a number of circuits which are all set to music. Pupils really enjoyed the 'Box2bfit' workshops and completed a variety of circuit training style activities. This event was funded from our Sport Premium money and continues our plan to have a headline event each term designed to motivate and inspire. Such events have included the visit of the Climbing Wall last summer and the visit of Chris Tomlinson, Olympic long jumper in the autumn. Pupil feedback about all these events has been very positive and pupils were again complimented on their willingness to have a go and their manners. Well done everyone! Please click here to view the photographs.

26th January 2017 - York Minster (KS2) Trip

"The school was invited for a school trip to York Minster, as one of so many in the dioceses of York.

The structure of the Minster has been replaced with 3 structures and has had lots fires.  While we were there we were shown how people were baptised and what you have to do to baptise somebody and also what a dioceses was.

We were shown around the Minster.  We also were told how they cleaned the great window and it takes them 10 years to clean one massive window!  To clean all of them it will take 150 years! York Minster took 250 years to build starting the current building during Anglo-Saxon times.

We finished our trip with an act of collective worship by candle light, in the crypt!"

Please be here by 8:20am on Monday morning as we need to leave school by 8:30amPlease also remember that a packed lunch from home is required too. We will be back before the end of the school day.

For those children who travel to school on the taxi, Morse's have confirmed they are unable to pick the children up earlier that morning due to other school run commitments, therefore please can you make other arrangements to ensure your child is at school by 8:20am. Thank you.

Huge thanks to the Friends of Hovingham School for organising and running the Hovingham market café at the weekend. Your sterling efforts are hugely appreciated and not taken for granted. Thank you to all who supported the café too!

FOHS would like to say a huge “THANK YOU” to all the parents, grandparents, teachers and carers who helped make this year’s Hovingham Christmas Market Café a roaring success. Thanks to everyone who made delicious cakes, buns, soups and sausage rolls (including our ever-brilliant school chef, Miss Martin) and especially to all the mums who helped on the day – what a team! We raised a whopping £629.19, every penny of which will go towards fun trips out, much-needed equipment and educational visits for all the pupils at Hovingham School. Thanks again and happy Christmas from everyone at FOHS!

Friday 2nd December - Penny Wars Total!

The children have been busy this week counting and bagging-up their ‘Penny Wars’ money jars. The winning team is Worsley Class who managed to collect a total of £4.07 in coppers. Class 1 also did very well with a total of -£16.43 in coppers. The overall ‘Penny Wars’ fundraising total is £64.34! Thank you and well done to everyone for contributing. The children had a great deal of fun and will be involved in deciding what playground equipment will be purchased with the funds they have raised. Well done everyone!

Friday 18th November - Pumpkin Treats!

Last month Hovingham Stores kindly donated 4 huge pumpkins to school. Our amazing cook, Miss Martin thought it would be a lovely idea to do some pumpkin recipes with the children, so for the last 2 Tuesdays a group of four children from Class 2 have assisted Miss Martin in the kitchen and have made some delicious treats: Pumpkin Soup, Pumpkin Cake and Pumpkin Pancakes (accompanied with chocolate sauce). The children have absolutely loved cooking and trying these recipes. All the children (and staff) have tried each recipe and we were all surprised that they had pumpkin in them.

For the recipes, please click on the below:

Pumpkin Pancakes

Pumpkin Cake

Roasted Pumpkin Soup

Miss Martin is going to make some more Pumpkin Cake and Pumpkin Soup to sell at the Hovingham Market Café so there will be chance for you to try these amazing recipes for yourself.

Friday 18th November - Children in Need goes Spotacular!

Spotty Day for Children in Need has raised £50 so far! A BIG spotty thank you to everyone for your kind donations. Please click here to view the photographs

Penny Wars School Fundraiser from the 7th - 18th November

Each class will be given a large sweet jar with the task to fill it with as many 1p and 2p coins as they can, before the fortnight ends.  The coppers will then be counted and the class with the highest total wins.  However, there is a small catch, the other class can sabotage your money jar by placing any notes or coins that aren’t copper in them and when the contents of the jar are counted, these will be deducted from the total.  So, if you put a £1 coin into the other jar, they would need a hundred pennies to balance it out.  Funds raised from this game will be used to renew our equipment for wet breaks and lunchtimes and the winning class will get first play with the new equipment.

Poppy Appeal

Poppies are now available in the school office.  Please send in a donation if you would like to support this worthy cause.

A huge thank you to Chris Tomlinson, Olympic long jumper, for visiting us on Tuesday. We all enjoyed the circuit training he did with us and the answers he gave to our questions. His advice was truly motivational, everything we do deserves 100% effort and nobody can ask for any more than that! There can be little more inspiring than a top sporting star spending time working with our children. Please click here to view the photographs

Wednesday 7th September - Power Down Pete

On Wednesday, 7th September Power Down Pete came to talk about the electricity we are wasting.  He told us about how the power stations work when we use electricity; he then told us that when the power stations work, they give out a gas called carbon dioxide and that it pollutes the air, which then pollutes the earth which makes it a nasty and dirty place to be in.

Pete then talked about the green house effect which is where coal burned in power stations contains carbon which combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form carbon dioxide.  The man made (or anthropogenic) component of the green house effect is caused by mans activities that emit greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The most important of these is the burning of fossil fuels.
