6th July 2017 - Federation Sports Day

Pupils from both schools spent the day at St Hilda’s enjoying a range of sporting activities. It was lovely to see so many parents who were able to attend in the afternoon to offer their support. We are all extremely proud of the efforts and sportsmanship of all the pupils! Please click here to view the photographs.

28th June 2017 - Rounders Event

Mr Smith is organising a KS2 (Yr 3-6) Rounders event for Slingsby, Hovingham C of E and St. Hilda’s School. This will be on June 28th at 1.15pm on Slingsby Sports Field. All parents are welcome to attend and offer their support to all three schools. It would probably be a good idea to bring plenty of water to drink and sunhats (school does have a plentiful supply of hats but please feel free to bring your own). There will be teams of 10 made up from Year 3/4 and Year 5/6.

26th May 2017 - Archery Day

On Friday 26th May all pupils will be taking part in an Archery Day at St Hilda’s. Grey Goose Archery (http://www.greygoosearchery.co.uk/archery-for-schools/) will be working with pupils teaching them traditional archery skills. The children will be working in groups and will all receive an hours tuition. Reception to Yr 3 children will be using “safe arrows” children in yr 4-6 will use traditional bows and arrows. Miss Martin will be serving up an appropriately themed packed lunch as we hope the weather will be kind and the two schools can enjoy lunch outside together. If your child/ren does not require a school packed lunch, please can you contact the school office by Wednesday 17th May for ordering purposes (Reception, year 1 and year 2 pupils are entitled to a free school meal). More details will follow closer to the time. Due to our Archery Day we’ve had to cancel the Year 3&4 rounders tournament. This has been replaced by a Tennis tournament on Friday 9th June. Please click here to view the photographs

28th April 2017 - Sports Leader Training

Mrs Carter would like to say that it was a real pleasure taking the Y5/6 children for a session of initial 'sports leader' training on Friday afternoon. The children were full of enthusiasm and great ideas. This training was carried out with the intention that they take responsibility of, and lead, a skills development programme on a lunch time. They will support the younger children in developing their skills but also have the opportunity to access the programme at their own level and support each other. During the session on Friday afternoon the Y5/6 children used their coaching techniques to support the Y1 children in developing their skills in running, balancing, throwing, catching and kicking. Mrs Carter was particularly impressed with the kind words of encouragement that she heard as she observed the children. All of the children said that they had really enjoyed the experience and that they are looking forward to the programme being introduced. Please click here to view some of the work in action.

31st March 2017 - Quicksticks Hockey Year 5-6

Many congratulations to the team, coached by Mrs Carter, who finished 3rd on Friday at the tournament held at Ryedale. All teams played very well and tried their best. There were some excellent saves made and clever attacking moves. I was especially impressed with the excellent teamwork. Mrs Carter was very proud of all involved. Thank you to Mrs Wood for accompanying pupils to the recent tournaments. Please click here to view the photographs

I'd like to celebrate the achievements of all the pupils who took part in the Swimming Gala last Friday. I am impressed by your efforts, your behaviour and your support for other pupils who took part. I'd like to thank Mrs Martindale and Mrs Dodds-Aston for staffing this event and to all those parents who kindly volunteered transport and supported the children. - Mr Pynn

6th February 2017 - Box2bfit

Following on from the success of our Skip2bfit day last year, on Monday 6th February we had a Box2bfit day in school. Children took part in boxing fitness training. The exercises were incorporated into a number of circuits which are all set to music. Pupils really enjoyed the 'Box2bfit' workshops and completed a variety of circuit training style activities. This event was funded from our Sport Premium money and continues our plan to have a headline event each term designed to motivate and inspire. Such events have included the visit of the Climbing Wall last summer and the visit of Chris Tomlinson, Olympic long jumper in the autumn. Pupil feedback about all these events has been very positive and pupils were again complimented on their willingness to have a go and their manners. Well done everyone!

I am delighted to announce that very recently both Hovingham and St Hilda's, Ampleforth CE VC Primary Schools have been awarded the Youth Sport Trust Bronze Quality Mark for their commitment to physical education (PE) and school sport. 27th September 2016 - Olympian Chris Tomlinson visit

A huge thank you to Chris Tomlinson, a long jumper who has competed at 3 games including London 2012, visited us on 27th September. The two schools will come together at Hovingham Village Hall for an afternoon of fitness activities and the chance to be inspired by a top sportsman. We all enjoyed the circuit training he did with us and the answers he gave to our questions. His advice was truly motivational, everything we do deserves 100% effort and nobody can ask for any more than that! There can be little more inspiring than a top sporting star spending time working with our children. Please click here to view the photographs

1st July 2016 - Year 3 and 4 Rounders at Ryedale School

Last Friday the children in Y3 and Y4 displayed great sporting skills in the competition at Ryedale last Friday. Play was of a high standard and got better as the games went on. Overall the two teams came second and third which was a fantastic result as we played with two smaller teams rather than having lots of extras. Well done Y3 and Y4!

Friday 27th May 2016 - Climbing Wall

On the last day of term, the pupils from Hovingham School joined the pupils at St. Hilda’s for the whole day. A climbing wall had been organised for the children and everyone (R-Y6) got a session on the wall at some point during the day. The children had a fantastic time and we were very proud of them all. Please see below a note from justClimb praising the children. To view all the photographs from the day, please click here.

"Many thanks for the opportunity to bring the climbing wall to your school today. It was great to see all the children giving the wall a go, even if they initially had reservations. Their enthusiasm and support for their classmates also had to be admired, as too were their great manners - all the children were a real credit to your school. Great to see several of the staff trying out their skills on the climbing wall too!!"  - JustClimb
